Domain Controller upgrade to Windows Server 2022

Follow Microsoft guidelines for upgrading the Domain Controller to Windows Server 2022.

If the Domain Controller has ADFS. It is mandatory to reconfigure ADFS after upgrading to Windows Server 2022. Therefore, when planning the upgrade, take into account extra downtime.

The upgrade order is:

  1. Upgrade the Domain Controller to Windows Server 2022. Make sure to leave the domain level as is (do not raise the domain level). In addition, do the following:

    1. Run adprep /forestprep manually only once in the forest.

    2. Run adprep /domainprep manually once in each domain that includes domain controllers.

  2. Upgrade the OS on all servers in the domain to Windows Server 2022.

  3. Once the OS in all servers in the domain is Windows Server 2022, only then raise the domain level to Windows 2022.
