Trigger variable properties

Trigger variable properties are used to define trigger variables. Trigger variables should be defined so that they are easy to use and identify and easy for the trigger firing mechanism to evaluate.

Property

Description

Trigger Variable

The trigger variable name. Trigger variable names can contain up to 80 characters including spaces and must be unique.

Trigger variable names cannot include the following reserved characters within the trigger definition mechanism:

  • [ ] -Right or left facing brackets

  • | - Pipe

Owner Organization

Each variable can be used by one organization. If the organization is a subordinate then all higher level variables will be available for it to use. This field cannot be edited when creating the variable. You must choose the correct organization before clicking Add New Trigger Variable.

Description

Can contain up to 256 characters for describing why the variable should be used (for example, what types of triggers should it be used for).

Type

Dictates the kind of information which will be stored in the variable. Although some variables can be assigned a default value, the actual value that the variable receives is only done when the trigger fires.

There are two classifications of types to choose from:

  • User-defined - you supply the default value for the variable.

  • System-defined - One or more components in the WFO suite supplies the value, but you can assign the predefined variable to another variable in order to localize the variable or make it more descriptive. These variables are readonly. The default values cannot be changed.

Default Value

The value that is used when the variable is initialized. Note that each time the DPA Client shuts down, variables are initialized and that you cannot set a default value for System defined variables.

Expiry

The time in seconds before the trigger’s value is reset to its default value. The expiry time is measured from the last time the trigger variable was set (even if it was set with the same value). The expiry property can be used to fire triggers when the variable reverts to its default value. This allows triggers to fire at specific timed intervals from when desktop events occur.

Use caution when setting the expiry time. If expiry is set to 0, it will not reset back to the default value.
